Description

Vintage employee badge from the Union Stock Yards South Omaha. This is estimated to have been manufactured between 1900 and 1920. The badge measures approximately 1-3/8"diameter. The pin is still well attached and has not been re-soldered. Few industries say “Omaha” like the Stockyards. The stockyards began in 1883 when Wyoming cattle baron, Alexander Swan, wanted a livestock market closer than Chicago, IL. Together with six local businessmen he formed the Union Stockyards on December 1, 1883. The Drexel farmhouse served as the very first livestock exchange. The second exchange building was constructed in 1885. This badge is a direct connection with the Old West cattle industry and old time cowboys. A piece of history you can hold in your hand. The back of the badge is marked J P COOKE CO. MFG'S OMAHA. They were the maker of this badge. The photos speak for themselves.
