These short little clubs were in most Mississippi River-front Saloons. This original antique one was found in a rough old river town and it appears to have notches carved into the wood (indicating how many unlucky patrons met the end of the club?).
The knobs at the end and about four inches up provide a sturdy place for the barkeep's firm grip and so the club could not be jerked away from him.
Overall length 15 inches.
