z Sold ~ Ganado Navajo Rug

Ganado is part of the Navajo Nation. The Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site in Ganado is maintained as an example of a 19th-century trading post. The first name for the settlement was probably Pueblo Colorado, but when Don Lorenzo Hubbell (Nov 27, 1853 - November 12, 1930) purchased the post in 1876, he changed the name to Ganado in honor of Ganado Mucho, the last Navajo peace chief and the twelfth signer of the Navajo peace treaty of 1868.

Granado-Area Eyedazzler Pattern

Between the end of the Classic Period in 1868 and the beginning of the Rug Period around 1895, Navajo weavers developed elaborate pattern of serrated diamonds and zigzags. This example features the serrated zigzags of the eyedazzler, a typical Ganado-area rug.  It was acquired around 1900.

Juan Lorenzo Hubbell was the leading trader of the early Rug Period (1895-1930), His base of operations was the trading post at Ganado, Arizona which he purchased in 1879 and operated until his death in 1930.
 Exquisite vintage hand-woven American Indian wool rug with an interesting wedge and diamond design. Constructed with natural wool colors and native dyes, this rug is an absolute showpiece. Unusually large at 77 inches by 40 inches, the natural neutral colors of this gorgeous rug would coordinate well with most any decor. This is an extraordinary rug with calm colors, that will warm your senses. The rug does have some flaws. (see the photos) We feel these add to the character and show that the rug has a history of use.
