Z Sold Trade sign for a blacksmith shop horseshoe

RJT#3175 -

Description

This is an old iron trade sign for a blacksmith shop. It was handmade and hand forged, as a large horse shoe. The piece is about 31" high by 24 1/2" wide. It is in old and weathered condition, with a very pitted dark black surface which attests to the many years that in hung over the door of the smithy. Signs like these were used to identify businesses in an era when some people could not read. It could have been made in the 1700's or 1800s but not likely any time after that. The shops that displayed such signs were an essential part of all villages, towns and cities in the 1800's. This sign has been repair twice over those years. One repair was hammer handforge welded and is almost not noticeable, the other has had a piece of strap iron hot riveted to the sign. Both repairs were done in the same shop where it hung, perhaps a 100 years ago. Both repairs show the same pitting and validate the age and history of its vintage. A very rare and unique collectable that will increase in value each year.
