Civilian Full Flap Holster for 19th Century Revolvers
This Civilian Full Flap Belt Holster was copied from an original antique holster in the River Junction Collection, preserving the details of a genuine piece of 19th-century Old West Gun Leather. This style was worn by civilians and many retired or former Civil War soldiers who continued carrying revolvers during the changing years of the American frontier. Its full flap design offered valuable protection from dust, weather, and daily wear while keeping the revolver secure.
The full flap civilian holster became popular because it was a practical design that could carry many of the most common revolvers of the period. This holster fits a 2 1/2 inch belt and accommodates the 1878 Colt, 1873 Colt and copies, 1875 Remington and copies, 1860 Army, 1861 Navy, 1858 Remington, 1851 Navy, and their conversions with 7 1/2 to 8-inch barrels. It will not fit Walker or Dragoon models. Available in left-hand or right-hand draw, this style was often worn with the revolver butt forward, allowing a smooth twist draw with larger frontier revolvers.
Made from heavy 6-7 oz leather, this holster is shaped by hand and finished with a natural tan oil finish. The open toe allows the longer barrels to extend freely, while the full flap closes securely with a brass stud. The border stamping and rosette detail were chosen to closely match the original example. Yellow linen thread and hand stitching provide the strength and traditional character found in quality Old West Gun Leather.
Most of our holster designs begin with original pieces from the River Junction Collection. Each holster is cut from the hide, worked at the craftsman’s bench, then dyed, oiled, and sewn by hand using traditional leather working methods.
