Description

Hold the string in your teeth, the range finder level at the end of the string, and move the slider to frame a target from top to bottom in the "window."  The distances on the side are based upon an object six feet high.
These were used in the Civil and Indian Wars and indeed well into the early 20th Century.
This example of a Civil War rangefinder is done in Brass and is marked on one side with "US Stadia CapandBall Arsenal" and measurements for Infantry 70.86 in, measurements are in increments of 50 starting at 100.  On the other side are measurements for Cavalry 98.43 in also in increments of 50 starting at 150 and stamped with "Made by CapandBall"
