Description

Antique Sharps Model 1853 Slant Breech .60 cal., Percussion Rifle, made circa 1856 in Hartford, Connecticut. Serial # 25083 on the tang and the barrel. This was Christian Sharps’ 5th model. The short version of the Sharps Model 1853. These powerful, accurate and reliable rifles certainly saw history from a firsthand perspective during the conflicts leading up to the Civil War, the war itself, and beyond on the frontier. This specimen is a 26 inch, heavy barreled, sporting rifle. The rear express sight is good, the front sight is missing the silver blade. Only about 3,000 were made. It features double set triggers for a fantastic light and crisp trigger break. This is ideal for shooting buffalo at longer ranges.  The Sharps pellet priming system has been removed, and is set to use the “hat” variety of percussion caps. The action function is excellently. The walnut stock shows the use of many hunts but is strong and solid. The forearm, however has crack on the underside. Metal is Overall a plum brown patina. All markings are readable. The 60 cal. bore is in good condition with strong crisp rifling. Here is a scarce and historic firearm that is in condition to shoot.
