Description

S&W "DOUBLE ACTION FRONTIER" MODEL, 44/40...1883 This Model showed the intent of S&W to be part of the American scheme of things on the Frontier. This Double Action Model was originally introduced a few years earlier, but in .44 Russian caliber.  Wesson conceived the idea of what Colt had discovered, a companion piece to the Winchester in 44/40! The frame and the cylinder were lengthened to 1-9/16 inch, versus the old length of 1-7/16 of an inch. It was relatively popular, and a much more "hefty" sturdy revolver as compared to competition.  Even so, it was a relatively limited production of only about 15,000, making it sought after by those that love the .44WCF. This DA Frontier, Serial No. 3003 would have been manufactured approximately in 1883. It has no nickle plating remaining and yet contrary to what the photos look like the surface is smooth. The mechanical action is perfect, both on single action and double action firing modes. The break open and eject and load mode is also perfect. The bore rifling is strong and sharp and does show some effect of the white clouds of black powder smoke. ALL factory applied markings, barrel address etc.. are clear and distinctly present. The feature I like the best is the frontier repair of the firing pin. Under close inspection you will see the the work of a frontier blacksmith/gunsmith. A very clever job of replacing the firing pin without welding and yet making it as strong as new. What image of the repair work being done, conjures up in my mind. Look it over closely and you can almost see the shade tree gunsmith at work. This specimen has the 5 inch barrel, and is dressed up with very colorful jigged bone grips. The character of this colorful Smith bespeaks of life in silver camps and frontier cow towns and well suited to the anointing as "THE DOUBLE ACTION FRONTIER". An excellent addition to any collection of Old West Treasures.
