Description
This squirrel rifle was built by John H Johnson. He used a recycled barrel as noted by the faint and over stamped markings on the barrel. It is a .32 cal percussion, with a 20 1/2 inch barrel with a LOP 13 inches and fitted with brass furniture. The main feature is the excellent double set triggers and lock which function perfectly. The rifling is strong with 6 lands and groves. All wood is sound with no cracks, chips or breaks.
"Johnston, John H. 1856-1889. Established a general gunsmithery at Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, in 1856 until 1865, when he moved to 179 Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. With his son, James L. Johnston, was also owner of the Great Western Gun Works at 706 Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, established in 1865. John H. Johnston died in 1889. The business continued until 1895. This rifle is idea for canoe travel or for bringing home the pot meat, without lugging a heavy long rifle.
