Rare C. M. Cain Tyler, Texas Floral Carved Holster
Here’s a piece of Texas-made Old West gun leather that you don't come across every day. Marked C. M. Cain of Tyler, Texas, this rare holster is a fine example of the hand-worked leather coming out of Texas during the frontier period. Makers like Cain left behind far fewer examples than the larger, better-known leather houses, making a signed Texas holster like this one particularly interesting.
The holster is cut from a single piece of leather, with the skirt flowing directly from the pouch rather than being sewn on separately. The pouch loop is riveted to the skirt, while the pouch itself is secured along its main seam with tight, original stitching. The front is beautifully hand carved with a floral pattern, showing the careful bench work that went into the piece. A sewn-in toe completes the bottom, giving the holster a clean, traditional finish.
The leather is in excellent condition with no damage, while the main seam stitching remains tight and complete. Its size makes it a good match for several large frontier revolvers, including the Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 and Model No. 3 Double Action Frontier with 6 to 6 1/2-inch barrels, along with Merwin & Hulbert revolvers with 6 1/2 to 7-inch barrels. It will not fit the cartridge Colts of the period.
