Edes Robe Tanning Co was Founded and incorporated in 1896 in Dubuque, Iowa, the business specialized in producing lap robes and rugs. Its market of fur-on tanning distinguished it from general leather tanneries, aligning it with the growing consumer demand for decorative and functional fur products in the 19th century. Not much is known about the signature. Though embroidered signatures or stitched initials were fairly common in 19th century fur and textile goods—often used as a maker’s mark, a form of branding, or even as a customer personalization option and some times the horses name. There are a couple of repairs to the Wool and the hide, though they look older, see images. Also a couple of spots on the hide that have worn through which was natural wear on the horses body. This piece was a well cared for item and kept you worm in a carrage or in a tipi in a winter camp. I have had these before and this is one of the best.
