Description

Pair of Antique 11mm (.44 cal.) PINFIRE REVOLVERS Belgium made, AMERICAN CIVIL WAR era, Double Action with Elephant IVORY grips.
This revolver design would become prolific, especially in Europe throughout the 19th Century, and sold for use during the American Civil War.
This pair features octagonal barrels with a top ribs and very beautiful antique ivory grips, with lanyard rings. Double action and single action.
The overall condition is very good. Original finish with no bluing. The action is strong in both double and single action. A six shot revolver, pin-fire with barrels of 6 1/8 inch, with both bores bright with strong rifling. Both pair of ivory grips are near perfect with a small original repair on the top of the left grip (see photo). Here is a pair of large pinfire  revolvers that are of superior quality and aesthetic! The barrel, cylinder show proof marks. The cylinders also show a ELG/ * cartouche indicative of British proof struck at the Liege Proof House. Note; Very possibly these revolvers were used in the Civil War.  Many Confederate and Union officers carried these. As early as December 1861, it had become clear to both Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis that the Union and the Confederacy would need to import longarms and revolvers from Europe in order to equip the tens of thousands of volunteers fighting on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line. Although the need was far greater for the Southern states, where arms making was not a widespread industry, even in the more industrialized North the burden of war would soon outstrip production.
