In the tradition 1849 Gold Rush this blade would indeed carve gold from quarters. The scales appear to be bone or perhaps Elk antler fastened with brass pins. The blade is 6 3/4 inches and overall 11 3/4 inches. All parts are tight and solid. There are no chips or cracks in the handle. This is a sharp knife that would give a century of service. This is a moderately heavy blade, In the Gold field this would have served for defense, cooking, chopping wood and swagger. This is a very well-made a nice example of a knife makers craft. The sheath is just as interesting as the knife its self as you can see by our photos. It all combines to make a uniquely interesting knife and sheath from good materials.
