A unique 19th Century blanket gun in the style of the Sioux Native American Indians of South Dakota. This is a cut down percussion ball and cap musket showing 1863 with an American Eagle and U.S. Springfield on the lock plate. It was from the Civil War era. It was later traded to American Indian tribes during the mid-to-late-19th Century Indian Wars era then altered over the years including the brass trade tacks and rawhide wrapping over the barrel. This type of cutdown gun is commonly referred to as a “Blanket Gun” or “Trade gun” due to the shorter length making it easily concealable under a long coat, saddle blanket, tipi blanket or otherwise. The nipple has been replace and is a shooter. The hammer pulls back and releases, as it should and overall the gun has a nice true finish from honest use. These early Indian Blanket Guns are becoming more scarce and truly embody the Indian Wars Era. An implement of war originally but later used as an all purpose muzzle loader, features a round smooth barrel with original ramrod going into the stock on the forend, iron lock plate original hardware, trigger guard and slightly crescent butte stock cap.
