Jigged Light Antique Bone Grips for Colt 1878 Double Action
The Colt Model 1878 came out of Hartford in the late 1870s as Colt’s large-frame answer to the growing demand for double-action revolvers. Known as the Frontier or Double Action Frontier, it found its way into the hands of Western lawmen, soldiers, travelers, and working men who wanted a substantial sidearm for life on the frontier.
These jigged, lightly antique bone grips give the big Colt the hand-finished character associated with period custom work. The jigged surface adds texture where the hand naturally meets the grip, while the antique bone coloring gives the piece the settled appearance of an old working revolver rather than something fresh from a factory shelf. Colt 1878 revolvers were supplied from the factory with hard-rubber grips; bone, and other materials seen on surviving examples were generally later changes made by owners or gunsmiths who wanted something different from the standard factory stocks.
We fit these grips to the individual firearm, which gives us what we need to get the fit right. If sending in the firearm isn't practical, we can work from the backstrap, trigger guard, and the current or original grips. On an old Colt, that careful fitting is what makes the finished work look and feel like it belongs there.
