Colt 1878 Double Action Jigged Bone Grips
The Colt 1878 Double Action was one of Colt’s early ventures into the double-action revolver, a field where Smith & Wesson had already made a name for itself. Jigged bone suits this firearm well, bringing to mind a cowboy in the bunkhouse after a long day’s ride, whittling and shaping his own grips to give his revolver some character.
Bone was a smart choice for this kind of work. With cattle common across the ranches and trails, good bone was much easier to find than antler, which had to be hunted or found as a shed. With a knife, some patience, and a little spare time, a cowboy could turn a plain piece of bone into something useful. The jigging also gave the bone a better grip while giving it the look of stag.
