The design behind these grips comes from the working traditions of the Old West and the custom grip work found on Colt 1873 Single Action Army revolvers. The original Colt Model 1873 became a familiar sidearm among soldiers, lawmen, cowboys, ranchers, and travelers, and over time, working men often replaced or customized grips to suit their own needs and tastes.
These grips are handmade new for the Standard 1873 SAA, a modern reproduction of the original Colt 1873. They are not antique grips, but their shape and materials are based on documented examples and traditional Old West craftsmanship. We chose this particular style because natural elk with bark gives the 1873's familiar grip a look and feel that could have come from a working Old West gunsmith’s shop.
Each pair is hand finished from natural elk antler, with some of the bark left visible to preserve the character of the material. The light antique finish is applied to bring out the natural grain and variation rather than make the grips appear artificially aged. Because elk is a natural material, no two sets will have exactly the same markings or texture.

The Colt 1873's design has endured because it was straightforward, practical, and made to be used. These handmade grips respect that history while giving a modern reproduction its own character.
