Belgium Copy of a Smith & Wesson Double Action Frontier Mod. Chambered for .44-40 Win. Caliber. It is marked 'FOR 44 WINCHESTER CARTRIDGE" on the top of the barrel flat. That identifies it as a .44-40 Winchester Caliber. The only other marking is BELGIUM proof marks on the cylinder and the right side of the barrel near the hing. The barrel measures 5 5/8 inches and has a shoot-able bore with strong rifling. This is a top-break, auto-eject, double action six shot revolver based on the S&W Patent Style. The double action functions perfectly, strong hammer spring and lock up , single action also works perfectly. There is much surface pitting on the gun. The main feature of this gun, is the fact that some bunkhouse cowboy artist made a pair of elk horn grips for it. They are in very good condition with no cracks or chips and are worth $300 on their own. This would make an interesting addition to the Smith & Wesson collection to show the period patent infringements of the day, c1870's. It is a piece of history that you can now own at reasonable price. You can find these advertised in the Sears & Roebuck and Montgomery catalogs of the 1880s. We always answer questions and entertain offers.
